Spelling gratitude …

I believe March is the month of gratitude. Everyone in the poetry community, that I know of, is feeling a keen sense of gratefulness. I feel it too. It must be in the air, somehow. 🙂

Do I thank heaps of dirty snow for making the air colder / for the heart measures the sweetness of sugared lawns / in the hint of a kettle on the stove / Out there is a grey winter / and somehow, it reminds me of a cup of hot tea //

Do I thank the cold sidewalks / frostily glaring at me / my face loves masks in February / Out there is a walk to silence / the wind listens / and there’s freedom in a stroll //

Do I thank the grocery store that ran out of parking spots / a quick rush to tick items off a list / and then I pause to smile at the strawberries I never came for / it paints the heart in happiness / suddenly I smell the evening suffused in the aroma of jam //

Do I thank having to see the doctor on a rainy day/ when he walks in holding a bouquet of assurances / there’s always something / and the sun gets suddenly brighter //

A lovely beginning to March. I’ll be making strawberry jam today 🙂
